Spice Up Your Life Homemade Salsa

Hello everyone! Here we are already (somehow) in May –seriously who pressed the “fast forward” button on 2018?! As we dip into the month of May it’s kinda the place where spring begins to turn to summer…it’s “Sprummer” if you will. It’s when we can finally start looking forward to beach trips, outside BBQ’s, summer concerts, having time to see friends and family, and all things good about this time, minus the rise in the mosquito population and lovebug season. Maybe it’s just me getting excited about the get-togethers/parties to come, or it’s the fact we just had Cinco de Mayo, but salsa has been on my mind. Not only is salsa a great snack, but it’s a great food to take to literally ANYTHING. You bring a sink full of salsa and a few bags of chips to any party….step aside Avengers, we got a new hero in town!
Now you totally could go out and buy premade salsa, but why buy a sad excuse of salsa (filled with citric acid, high fructose corn syrup, “natural flavorings” and enough sodium to make a slug shrivel up just by looking at it) when you can easily make your own that is natural, nutritious and so delicious that Moe’s and Chipotle are gonna be calling for the recipe.

Don’t just stand there! Go grab a cutting board, a knife, big bowl and let’s get started!

Spice Up Your Life Homemade Salsa

2 large, ripe tomatoes (I used a mix of Better Boy and Taxi tomatoes for aesthetic appeal)
1/2 of an onion
3-4 tablespoons of fresh lime juice
1 clove of garlic
1/2 or 1 whole jalapeño pepper (depending on your spice preference)
1/4 cup fresh cilantro
add ground cumin and salt to taste

Literally just finely chop it all, juice the lime and throw everything into a bowl. Done. Makes about 5 servings. Serve right away or refrigerate for later.
**I normally double (or triple) the recipe, because my family eats it by the bucket full.**

Super simple right!? You can use this for chips, tacos, burritos, taco salad, or just eat it out of the dang bowl, cause it really is that good. You can add corn, black beans, bell peppers, or anything else that strikes your fancy!  The greatest part about this salsa is it’s really good for you! Tomatoes: high in Vitamin C and A, helps prevent cancer, heart disease and cataracts. Onion: lowers cholesterol and blood pressure, relives congestion and helps prevent cancer. Lime: high in Vitamin C and helps you heal faster. Garlic: lowers cholesterol, kills viruses and helps prevent heart disease and strokes. Cilantro: good for healing, digestion and cholesterol. Jalapeño: high in Vitamin C, good for congestion, heart and stomach. Overall it’s low fat, low sodium, and has no added sugar! I personally used the produce from my family’s farm, Parke Family Hydro Farms, so it was also pesticide free, Non GMO and hydroponically grown. Honestly can’t get any healthier than this! Make it, eat away and shout “Cinco de Bye-o” to guilt, because thanks to this salsa…there is no reason for that!
Enjoy and leave a comment if you try it out 🙂
